(x posted because I really want an answer)
How do you start learning to handplant? What do yoyu do, exactly? And what do I need to know (or know how to do first) to make sure I don't break my neck and die? |

This is easier to demonstrate than to explain in writing, but I will do my best
To start with you need a big ramp, at least 8-10 feet. It is possible to do it on a small ramp but it is much harder. Having a bit of actual vert is nice too.
First you need to learn the move of the handplant inside the ramp on the wall. This looks really silly but it is safer than trying it at the coping right away.
The Handplant Move
The move itself is more like a cart wheel than a handstand. You rotate your upper body sideways. While kicking your legs out straight above you. This feels really weird because you skate forward and then in a tight move you rotate sideways reaching for the ramp under your feet. At first you will end up in a flailing pile!
In Transition
Skate up the transition, when you are about half way up the wall, throw yourself into the handplant move on the wall. You will end up lying on your belly in the ramp upside down with your legs straight above you. Try to pull your knees in front of you and slide out on your knee pads.
Practice this over and over again. Once you have mastered the move sliding out on your knee pads, try to pull your knees forward a little bit faster so you can slide out on your skates instead of your knees.
Once you have the move mastered and you can easily go into it and come out on your skates, bring it higher and higher in the ramp until you are able to do it on the coping.
Good luck! _________________ RollerGirl |

yep, I am planning to come to Rollercon, but i have to get my passport first
The handplant isn't actually that scary, because you can learn it low in the ramp and then bring it to the coping slowly. It is just hard to explain, it is much easier to show someone the move. _________________ RollerGirl |
