Environmental and Social Sustainability

We consider ourselves to be a social enterprise . We care about the world in which we live and the living beings whom we share it with. Our goal, as a company, is to make the world a better place; one pair of roller skates at a time.

Roller skates are a great way to stay active. They're also a good reason to go play outside, or at the rink, and have fun with your friends, family and community. Roller skates are sturdy and long lasting, that's why our parent's skates are still around!

Our current efforts to reduce our environmental impact:

• Waste management. We are careful to throw out as little as possible.
  
  We recycle almost everything that we do not reuse including all paper products, soft plastics, cardboard and beverage containers. Whenever possible we reuse boxes and other packing materials that we receive from our manufacturers. We also use boxes that were considered culls and would otherwise be wasted. We only purchase boxes made of recycled paper. We use 100% recycled photocopy paper for all office purposes, and we limit our use of this paper through double-sided printing and reuse of scrap paper. Our craft paper, envelopes and business cards are all made of recycled paper as well. Still, paper products are only ever utilized when necessary as we favor digital means.
• Conscientious consumption. We strive to reduce our consumption of heavily packaged products and we do our best to sell products with low embodied energies - we favor skates and parts manufactured in North America to lessen the impact of transportation-associated pollution.
• Organic clothing. We believe in organic agriculture and that includes organic clothing. Did you know that the cotton industry is estimated to be responsible for 25% of all pesticide usage globally and that pesticide residues are not uncommon in cotton products? For these reasons the RollerGirl t-shirt is made of 100% organic cotton and we will be moving the rest of our clothing line to organic cotton as soon as possible.

Our current efforts on the social front:

We believe in creating a work environment that is pleasant, diverse, challenging and rewarding. Our employees are treated with respect and appreciation.

Approximately 75% of our products are Canadian or US made. In addition to the environmental reasons stated above, we are also conscious of where all of our products are made and try to avoid sweatshop-labor products as much as possible. Our clothing line is exclusively American made by American Apparel. You can read more about their workers policies here.

We provide products that make people healthier and happier. Roller skating is fun, reduces stress, is fantastic exercise, encourages social interaction and gets people outdoors. Zooming around on roller skates reminds us all how much fun it is to be alive.

We have a strong belief in good will. When in doubt we always take what we believe to be the high road.
