Help..Back on skates

Help..Back on skates

Postby aharo » Thu Mar 09, 2006 8:04 pm

I just got back into rollerskating. Its been about 22 years since I was on skates. I am 42. Went to the rink tonight and found out I can't skate anymore!!! I use to rollerdance in my early years. Does this mean I have to learn how to skate all over agan or will I get better after a few sessions. I loved to skate and want to keep at it. I felt like such a fool tonight....

No problemo! Here's another ego boost for ya! The only other pair of quads I've ever owned were those plastic sizable fisherprice rollerskates. hehehehe

Fisherprice rocks!!!!! my first pair were the real classic metal ones that sized to your feet(they were my moms when she was a little girl)!!! I think my parents still have them hanging in their basement!!! I went online last week and bought my first brand-new pair of skates and now you can't keep me off them! I don't know what took me so long to get back into them!!!! KEEP ON ROLLIN GIRLS!!!

Hey, did you go to Scooters? I went there last night for the first time. Also, first time on skates in 25 years. I was so depressed at my lack of ability!!! Back in the day, I could do all the moves the Staff guy was doing. Now I can't even make it around the track.

I'm going to try again though. Those rental skates are the worst, aren't they? I'm hoping to find a pair of indoor skates/wheels to buy that will allow me to "relearn" everything. Good luck to you too.

Thanks lesliej. Yes it was Scooters. I saw the rentals and they did look pretty bad. I have my old skates still and have bought new ones from Roller Girl. Can't wait for them to get here. I am going to keep trying as well to get my groove back. Best of luck as well...

You can do it

Postby Micki Mercury » Thu Mar 09, 2006 11:27 pm

Yes Rollergirl is great when it comes to customer service. She has done a great job here in Vancouver with sizing and gearing us up for our league. She was able to get 36 or so of us all ready to rock. As to getting back up and going again it will take time, but don't give up... practice is the main thing, like with everything. If you have done it before you can do it again, Are you skating with gear on or not? I know that made a huge diffrence in my confidence level. It is ok to fall when you are protected.
You can do it!!!!!!

No unfortunately I didn't think I would need the gear considering I have skated without it before and boy did I learn my lesson. Have a nice bruise on my leg to prove that. I will wear it in the future though. Thanks for the advice Micki.

I love my skates and the service from Rollergirl was incredible, awesome amazing. Now if only the weather would co-operate so I could go out and skate. I got some gear, so falling won't be to bad. Now if I could only convince some friends they need to get some skates so they could come with me. muahahahahaha  but they're afraid of falling....

Start Skating

Postby SweetDreams » Fri Mar 10, 2006 2:19 pm

Buff and Aharo
The secret between good skaters and bad skaters is very simple.
Practice, practice, practice, practice. The wonderful thing about skating is just about anybody can do it if they put the time in and most rinks have somebody there that if they see you need a little help or a pointer or two, are more than happy to share. If you skated before and you are getting back into it after 3 or 4 times you will surprise yourself with how well you are doing and your new found confidence.
It is always best to have your own skates but if that is not feasable right away skating on rentals will make you a better skater. Don't over do it our let your feet get too blistered, this can discourage a lot of newbi's.
Maybe I will see you at the Charity Old School Skate at Scooters in Mississauga Ontario on April 29th, it is going to be a blast.

Thanks Sweet. I skated for about 10 years before I gave it up. Wish now I didn't. Got back on my skates today and your right its getting better. I am gonna try to make it April 29. Sounds like it should be a blast.

Thanks for the tips Sweet, I have been trying to practice... in my kitchen...LOL I've inlined before so the quads are coming naturally. I just want the snow to disapear, as I have no indoor skating places where I live. But I LOVE my urban rollers that I got from RollerGirl! :D :D :D
