RDS closed in 2006
This skatepark was the mecca of skateboarding in Canada.
The layout was divided in two rooms:
The street course was the size of 2 basketball courts side by side if not bigger. There were rails, kickers, quarter pipes, banks, stairs and wall rides of every size offering a creative environment for skaters of all styles and skill levels. The floor would get slippery on busy days but it would get mopped between every session by the vigilant staff.
The ramp room was just a bit smaller than the street course but it was big enough to fit the very sweet 13 foot vert ramp in addition to a 6 foot "L" bowl, a 4 foot trapeze bowl and 2 foot mini-"L"-ramp. All of the above were superbly designed and topped with a friendly wooden surface; the coping was slick and sweet and the two medium bowls were connected at the spine. The vert was wonderful; it was high, wide and big; there were extensions, a copped launch pad and a funky transfer.
There was also a Pro Shop where you can buy equipment, clothing or other RDS merchandise. There's still a RDS Skate Supply store in North Vancouver, you can get more information at their website: www.rdsskatesupply.com
The RDS skatepark was a little bit out of the way (in Richmond) but it was well worth the trip.
The entry price was $10 a session, there were full day and membership prices as well.
RIP RDS.
